- Client: The Mandela Bay Development Agency
- The team: Imbono FJA Architects, Arcuss Gibb Consulting
- The scope of work: The project was to introduce and to reinforce the pedestrian and visual link between Govern Mbeki Avenue and Strand Street to create a greater sense of place also friendly and sunny spaces onto which pedestrians and future residents as well as business people could mingle during lunch hours and on weekends.
- Interesting facts: Two new focal points were introduced as beacons at either end of the great staircase- firstly the Fishbone Sculpture and the secondly the Water Feature at the base of the stairs. This reinforced the link to the Campanile and harbour beyond. Elements of the ocean were reflected in the curvy lines in the paving and these were juxtaposed against the ridged grid system of the city. Ship masts were used as advertising posts and create a nautical feel.
